What International Alumni Are Saying about Escoffier

Bekei Ijewere headshot Bekei Ijewere Country of Origin: Nigeria Online Culinary Arts Graduate
“I was able to build a network of chefs in the industry. Without Escoffier insisting on that externship experience, I would still be a lone ranger, so to speak. But now, I have these array of chefs behind me that I can call upon at any one time, and they’ll come.”
Arnold Safari headshot Arnold Safari Country of Origin: Kenya Online Culinary Arts Graduate
“I would recommend the [Escoffier] program to any person that I come across in my career because I enjoyed it myself, and it has helped me a lot to become who I am today as a chef.”
Maria Rodriguez headshot Maria Rodriguez Country of Origin: Colombia Online Plant-Based Culinary Arts Graduate
“In this course, you are able to learn a lot of skills you’re going to need in the future. You are not only learning your recipes, you’re learning the skills you are going to use in life. For me it was the best option to follow my dream.”

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT APPLICATION CHECKLIST

Follow the steps below to get started. You can also connect with an admissions representative who can walk you through each step and answer your questions.

NOTE: Steps 1 to 3 are required for all international applicants. Steps 4 to 8 are required only for students who are planning to travel to the United States to study at our Austin, Texas, or Boulder, Colorado campus. Visas cannot be issued to students who plan to study online.

  1. Apply for admission to Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts.

This is the first required step! You must first choose a campus and program and follow the step-by-step application instructions. Apply to one of the campuses by choosing an option below:

  2. Provide official proof of high school graduation or equivalent.

Your document must be translated and evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a translation company approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

  3. Provide proof of English proficiency.

You must prove English proficiency in one of the following ways:

    • Demonstration of a Common European Framework Reference for Language (CERF) level of B2 or higher.
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with an Internet-Based Test (iBT) score of 65 or higher, Paper-Based Test score of 500 or higher, or Computer-Based Test (CBT) score of 173.
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a level of 6 or higher.
    • Cambridge English: First (FCE) grade of a C or higher or Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) grade of a CEFR B2 or higher.

    Conditional Acceptance

If you cannot yet show proof of English proficiency, you can still apply for conditional acceptance to Escoffier. Under this provision, you may apply now, but must attend an approved language school prior to final acceptance. When you complete your program, send Escoffier your certificate of completion.

Additional Steps for Students Applying to Study On-Campus in Austin, Texas, or Boulder, Colorado
  1. Provide Financial Affidavit of Support.

Prospective F-1 or M-1 students must have the financial resources to live and study in the United States. This includes being able to cover the cost of tuition, books, living expenses and travel. To ensure that you have sufficient funds to study at Escoffier, please provide family bank statements and documentation from a sponsor, if necessary. Bank statements should be translated to U.S. dollars and be dated within the last 6 months. Students must provide evidence of sufficient resources of a minimum of $35,000 for our diploma programs, or $57,000 for our Associate degree programs.

  2. Provide additional documents required for Transfer Students (if applicable).

If you are transferring from another institution: provide a copy of your current I-20, passport, a copy of your I-94 card, and Transfer Verification form. For transfer credit evaluation, provide college level transcripts.

  3. Escoffier issues your Form I-20.

If you are accepted for enrollment, Escoffier will issue you a Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Students.” A student and the student’s spouse or children must have a Form I-20 to apply for a student visa to enter the United States. The Form I-20 lists your program start date, 30 days before which you are allowed to enter the United States. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Form I-20 is allowed to be signed and transmitted electronically.

Escoffier can expedite delivery of your I-20 for an additional fee.

  4. Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee.

The Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is the system the government uses to maintain information on students who come to the United States. Note that you can only pay the SEVIS fee after you receive your Form I-20 from Escoffier.

  5. Apply for your M-1 or F-1 visa in your home country.

Apply for a visa that will allow you to enter the United States to study at your selected campus. This step includes an interview with a U.S. Consulate in your home country. You are expected to have the original Form I-20 at your visa interview (no copies).

If your visa application is accepted, the consulate will issue you an M-1 or F-1 visa.

    M-1 Visa

This visa is issued for the Austin, Texas or Boulder, Colorado, campus for any of their diploma programs.

Work and Externships. While attending school, M-1 students may not accept employment. M-1 students may accept an unpaid position while completing their externship course. Practical training is the only type of work permission available to M-1 students. It allows students to get on-the-job training that is not available in their home country. Eligible students may have up to six months of practical training after they complete their program.

    F-1 Visa

This visa is issued for Associate Degree programs at the Austin, Texas, campus.

Work and Externships. The type of work you can do under the F-1 visa depends on whether or not you have completed an academic year of study.

In the first academic year, F-1 students cannot work off-campus. However, they may work on-campus up to 20 hours per week, subject to certain conditions and job availability.

After the first academic year, F-1 students have an opportunity to engage in 2 types of off-campus employment related to their area of study:

    • Pre-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT): This program allows you to work off-campus part-time (up to 20 hours per week) in an approved program while school is in session. You may work full-time when school is not in session.
    • Post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT): After completing your studies, you may apply to work in an approved program for a part-time (less than 20 hours per week) or full-time position. F-1 students are eligible for up to to one year of post-completion practical training.
Don’t Make Final Travel Plans Without Your Visa!

Remember, there is no guarantee that you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
